“the life lessons I learned stuck with me”
“I was a student at MHK when I was a kid and the life lessons I learned stuck with me as I got older. When I became a parent, I wanted my son to have those same life lessons. Not just confidence, but the discipline and work ethic, the whatever it takes attitude, perseverance to get through hard things. My son is very introverted and struggled a lot with social anxiety. Since he has been in karate, our extended family compliments him all the time on his confidence and leadership abilities. … karate is really our second home. … I love how supportive the MHK community is and I encourage everyone I meet to try martial arts. No matter your age. I am 45 and still training, I like to try to keep up with the kids!”

“Family run, with that unique old school touch”
“There is no enough words to express how awesome this Karate School in Thornton is. Family run, with that unique old school touch that makes you feel welcome and at home. You don’t have to spend much time at this place to capture the dedication and passion the students radiate. Been a parent of two is hard to be able to give what my kids need in all areas of their development and wellbeing. Joining this school has been the best complement for our kids. They’ve been able to learn structure and discipline in a fun way. Our oldest son have found great role models that have inspire him, and we’ve seeing so many amazing attributes flourish in him, in just a couple of weeks. … Thank you Mile High Karate in Thornton for all you do for the community.”

“I didn’t expect the self-confidence, determination”
“This is such an amazing school! My son has been studying here for four years. He’s developed focus and discipline as well as becoming physically fit. The instructors are professional, dedicated and caring. The surprising part for me was after I joined three years ago. As an adult, I didn’t expect the self-confidence, determination and goal-setting abilities I’ve gained. … I’ve greatly improved my work situation and am in better physical health than I have been in many years. … Mile High Karate takes the time to train you, support you throughout your journey and develop your skills and strengths.”

“not only a martial arts school but a family”
“Mile High Karate is the best martial arts school I’ve found that is not only a martial arts school but a family. All the Instructors make you feel like family and want you to be successful not only in class but in life as well. My son and my husband both are MHK students. … My son never spoke his mind or understood how to control and or release his anger without being hurtfull to others … We finally found Mile High Karate and thanks to their student plan of self-responsible goal setting and how to control ones inner emotions, My son has improved 100% in attitude ,emotion control ,and self awareness. My husband has improved on his communication not only at work but also at home, he has gained more confidence and self control.”

“a life altering experience for me and my family”
“Becoming a Black Belt at Mile High Karate was a life altering experience for me and my family. I learned so much during my 7 year journey. It helped me in so many ways. It helped me thrive in my professional career, learn how to be a leader, learned how to be humble, learned how to stay physically fit. The list can go on and on. The best part about it is not the black belt (that is the cherry on the top), it is the incredible people I met through my journey who are now my family. I would highly recommend joining the family.”

“This place is like a Temple for me”
“This place is like a Temple for me, where I worship my body, mind and soul. As soon as you enter, the loud Aiyeahs’ will give you goosebumps, motivate you to get on the mat. … Everyone is treated with respect, a ninja kid to a grand parent. MHK has prepared a very good step by step plan and if you follow it, do all the homework, you will feel the difference. I have seen a lot of kids positively changed, since the day they joined. Me (adults) too.”

“Respect is missing in our culture”
“I was impressed. Its just not about Karate, its about other life skills she is learning. Yes, sir – Yes, Mam is used at all times in the class and although my daughter and her husband are a bit uncomfortable with their daughter calling them with this respect, I do not. Respect is missing in our culture, and the Martial Arts has a foundation based on respect. Learning about how to handle situations with strangers and how to protect yourself with your words was powerful learning for her and the other students. … I am grateful my granddaughter is in this program. She loves it and she likes the friends she has met.”

“The turnaround’s just been incredible”
“My oldest child, oldest son, [my son], he was – at best – mostly C’s and an occasional B in school. He’s been doing this for about 90 days now. He’s now almost straight A’s. He’s got one B. The turnaround’s just been incredible. … Seeing the difference in discipline, his goals, his drive, it’s just amazing. He’s a different son. He’s a different kid.”

“a totally different child in 3 months”
“My oldest son has become incredibly more responsible. Last year, he hated himself, hated his life, didn’t want to do anything with anybody. And now he does his own homework, his grades have improved, the teachers are very impressed with him, he’s very helpful around the house now. He’s a totally different child in 3 months. … It teaches the kids “yes sir,” “yes ma’am.” It teaches them respect.”

“much more self-confident and she walks very proud”
“When she was healed, she was very physically healed. But I think spiritually and mentally, she needed to heal. And for some reason, she gravitated to karate. She wanted to do karate. She wanted to be healthy. She wanted to have more balance. She wanted to be like everybody else. … But I have seen a tremendous change in her. She is just much more self-confident and she walks very proud. And that makes me very happy.”

“The bullying has since stopped”
“Kids were picking on her, bullying on her. … So basically, it came down to the point where the last incident with a girl at school, she came home with a swollen cheek. And that’s when my husband decided to look for a self-defense class, and she started. … The bullying has since stopped. My daughter has more self-discipline. She feels confident about herself. Her grades have improved. … I honestly feel that a lot of it has to do with being here at Mile High Karate.”

“his ability to focus and set goals”
“I think what really sold me on this program was I watched my 5-year-old really mature and his ability to focus and set goals. We watched the short-term goals and the long-term goals, that I think is really something that Mile High Karate is really good at focusing in on and giving the kids a sense of you’re not just going from this belt to this belt to this belt, but the big picture is I think that really helped. … They’ve got a sense of maturity in the classroom. They’ve got more poise. They feel confident in themselves. … I recommend Stephen Oliver’s Mile High Karate all the time.”

From shy to self-assured
Parents and students describe the change they see most often: a quiet child who starts speaking up, making eye contact and believing in themselves.

“I was very shy and had probably said a total of 10 words the whole school year. I kept my head down and didn’t look anyone in the eye. Now 3 ½ years later, I’m not shy anymore. I look everyone in the eye and hold my head up high. I am respectful and responsible. I am very fit and getting fitter every day. I also get good grades. I focus on the task at hand while at school and set a good example for my classmates.”

“I have more confidence now. Kids make fun of me because of my speech. Before karate, I use to cry and play by myself. Now, I try to say the words right and be a good friend. I am not afraid to give a report or do show-ntell because I practice what I am going to say. During SWAT class, I can help other students with their basics and lead warm ups. … I have made lots of friends in Karate. They don’t make fun of me because of my speech. They help me learn the forms and with sparring. We tell each other “good job” and “you can do it.””

“Karate has also given me self-confidence. I used to be afraid of what other people thought and always did what I thought other people wanted me to do. I have also become more outgoing. before I came to karate I was a sheltered shy little girl but after a while I started warming up to people and I came out of my shell now I’m running groups in class and warming up the classes at the beginning of class. Since I started karate I have had better focus at school. … Most of all karate has helped me learn self defense.”

“[My daughter] entered kindergarten last year and was having great difficulty dealing with the kids. She just felt overwhelmed. … She didn’t have confidence. So we saw the flyer for Stephen Oliver’s Mile High Karate and we brought her in. And in a matter of about 2 months, we saw a big change in her self-esteem. She started being able to converse with other kids, problem-solve when conflicts came up, just major, major difference. … I would recommend Stephen Oliver’s Mile High Karate to any parent, whether they’re having trouble with their students in school or whether they want to give their kids a sport, something to look forward to.”

“I was easy to make friends with but very shy and quiet. Being so, I had low self-image and low self-esteem. … This didn’t just help me at karate, but also in school. I was always so afraid of giving speeches and sometimes this is still a fear, but with the help of karate I’m able to do it successfully and face the fear every time it comes up. … I have a better self-image than I ever had and I am never worried to express who I am. … Karate has done so much for me, and I’ve realized the reason I practiced and became an instructor was because of the love I have for it and the students.”

“Mile High Karate has been amazing. We enrolled my 6 year old because he desperately needed some focus. In the last 6 months he has shown incredible changes. At the same time he absolutely loves being there and is incredibly proud of what he has accomplished. I think what I appreciate the most is that training isn’t just a hobby for the instructors, it is a full time job. The teachers put so much time and dedication into their students. They focus on a curriculum with not only martial art skills but also practical life lessons and fundamentals directed at younger students that are also important reminders for all other students. I have been so impressed that I have been encouraged to join and better myself. Great Job MHK.”

“Karate has also taught me good leadership skills. I know I could take almost any project and lead it successfully. I’ve learned how to take charge. I used to be the girl in a group of friends that almost always obeyed or didn’t stick up for her-self. Now I’m like the leader of the group. My friends listen to me and ask me for advice. Third karate has taught me great self-defense. I used to hate sparring. I always got hurt. But once I learned better self-defense I loved to spar. It was fun cause I knew what I was doing and could protect my self. Then I could fire back. After that my self-defense got better and better. So did my technique.”

Respect, discipline and self-control
Yes sir, yes ma’am, chores without being asked, and self-control under pressure. Families talk about character as much as karate.

“The best decision we made for our sons. Consistent character, leadership and personal development. Sustained athletic and intellectual growth. “The last recognizable improvement is the associations I now have with some pretty terrific people. Most everybody is in the process of doing something positive with themselves. This holds especially true for my son. He is surrounded by adults and peers that are motivated and working hard on something very wholesome. The people in Mile High Karate and especially prep cycle are all focusing on improving themselves through hard work and dedication. Because of martial arts, I have surrounded my son and now my daughter in a very positive and nurturing environment. It sure is a much better environment than seeing my kids hanging out at the skate park with foul language, cigarettes and other shenanigans going on every day.”

“We still have the picture Mrs. Christensen took of our whole family with our Basic class white uniforms on almost four years ago. I see [my son] standing up to my chest level in the picture and now he is almost as tall as me. This period of our children’s lives will be more vividly remembered because of the entire family’s involvement in Karate. Seeing each of us progress through the different color Belts and different Master Club levels has documents this period in each of our lives more fully. Each of us helping one or more of the others at different times during this journey has help build our relationships and memories as a family as well.”

Black Belt candidates on the hard work, the prep cycle and what earning the belt means.

“I know I have good self-esteem because of what happened at a karate tournament. In sparring I won my first fight, but the judges put it down as a loss. I realized I wasn’t being called up anymore, so I went to the judge and said, “Excuse me, sir, you’ve made a mistake.” I got a first place trophy that day because I had enough self-esteem to speak up. … Most important, when I got the list of people who should test for their black belts, next to my name it said “-not likely to pass.” Instead of quitting after four years of hard work, I wanted to stick with it.”

“Having had the whole family go through and get their black belts , it was not only reassuring knowing my 4 girls could all defend themselves, but I think the most amazing by product of the mile high system is that in any given situation or confrontation, they would step up and handle whatever is thrown at them. I watch them easily converse with all walks of life, and find myself constantly amazed at their self confidence. A lot of this is due to their training at mile high. Highly recommend. Great instructors.”

“We joined Mile High Karate as a family and enjoy that we continue to train together. As well as karate, and the fitness and skills we have acquired, we have learnt commitment, resilience, good habits, communication, leadership, a positive attitude, self discipline, goal setting and achievement of those goals, and to challenge ourselves. We have made lifelong positive habits and friendships as well as progression in kempo martial arts. We highly recommend the Mile High Karate School!”

“My daughter started as a shy kid who was too shy to even talk to the instructors, now nearly 5 years later has come out of her shell and thriving.”

“We decided to give Karate a go as my daughter was having trouble standing up for herself with a bully at school. Over the last few months, my overly confident and eccentric child has returned! She is not only speaking up for herself, but she is also speaking up for her classmates as well! Her focus has improved immensely, as has her fitness and willingness to get involved. The best thing about MHK Tauranga is that they recognise the need for a balance between fun and structure, especially with younger children. They show an interest in our children’s achievements and lives outside of the Dojo, as well as getting to know us parents as well. Definitely recommend MHK Tauranga!”

“Awesome school. They really take time to know the families and all new students are made to feel welcome and helped every step of the way, not just by the instructors but by all the more experienced students. Very holistic approach that incorporates school learning and achievement and taking more responsibility at home.”
