Mile High Karate raises $500 for Children’s Hospital
October 2006 - "The Recorder" ( southern Maryland's newspaper)
In spite of the dreary weather on Saturday, Sept. 24, Mile High Karate in Dunkirk raised more than $500 dollars for the Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Instructor Doug Mooney said he wanted his young students to experience contributing to the community in their own unique way.
‘‘Seeing these kids go out and do their very best for other children who aren't able to practice karate right now, has been a very rewarding experience,” Mooney said in a press release.
Some of the students on the Mile High Karate demonstration team are as young as 3-years-old. All 19 children, ages 3 to 16, participated in board-breaking, weapons and forms demonstrations, as more than a hundred spectators watched.
The karate school, formally Tracy’s Karate, has been on West Ward Street in Dunkirk since 1999. It recently joined the national martial arts franchise chain Mile High Karate, based out of Denver, Colo.
